In the mud I currently play, I HATE the religious system. It is made up of only a few Gods and they can all pretty much be catergorized as GOOD or EVIL.
I want some shades of gray... I don't really even care for there being GODS persay. I would rather there be a system of spiritiual beliefs based on something like elments of nature.
There could be groups that place their spiritual connection to Fire, Water, Earth, Trees, etc.
There could also be groups who have a system of "guardian spirits" based on local wildlife, such as in Native American cultures.
Another group could have a zen-like quality. Yet another could have the rigid feel and "God" of modern religion.
If there is going to be a religious system, I wouldn't want it to be the same old boring "pick a god, keep your alignment in check, say a prayer, make an offering = you get the advantage in battle.
I don't think there should be a huge advantage to having a religion unless you are a monk-like character. It should serve more of an extra source of enrichment, not something you feel almost obligated to join into so you arent the only one who isnt getting that bonus effect.

I agree with all of that very much..
As a small compromise I am open to both god-fearing and spirit-loving religions. I also imagine most inhabitants will consider the god-fearing religions unusual, to say the least.

May I suggest splicing and spicing yet again with roleplay? Choose a diety to fear, a diety to worship or just be a "911 believer" and pray when you're desperate. If you're a thief, pick a sneaky god, if you're a priest pick a smite-the-unbeliever-fire-amd-brimstone Presence.
Or if you're into blood and death, choose a god that likes to pick her teeth with baby bones.
Roleplay it. Stop by a temple now and then, talk to a clergy member. Drop a donation. Pray every now and then (hopefully under your breath if you're climbing the estate wall). Get zero benefits most of the time, but keep hoping.
Your god, going about their business of, um, being godly, hears your prayer or just takes an interest in you (not good if they're the evil type). They check up on your roleplay. You've been a pious (or gleefully unholy) kiddo, so they use some of your points to bless you for a short time. Making a grave error in your ways? Your goddess may righteously smite you, or may just meddle your life because that's who and what they are and you knew it when you sent up a burnt offering.
Don't want a higher power messing in your life (and RP points)? Be an athiest. Save your resources for things you want to spend on.
Balance bonus: You can't have a divine blessing constantly, it costs points. Be a good little follower regardless of bonuses or not.

I think this whole idea of "immortals must interact with mortals" should be reconsidered from a neutral standpoint. The only valuable reason I see for it is roleplay. On the other hand, I have seen quite a bit of bad in it, from simple staff time constraints or out of sync login times to basic personality conflicts, not to mention the inability of staff to be completely fair, malicious or not.
On top of all that, I just don't like the gaudiness of it, even if it is popular.
That said, I wonder if we can encompass the idea of deity interaction into something more friendly to other personality types, a general sphere of staff-interaction, with more well defined triggers. First, deities should be NPC's not the login for the staff, that's such a blatantly ridiculous precedent imho. Second, I think godly favors should be programmed as buying them with FP, this is after all why they were called "favor" points in DR, even though you received them for roleplay. Third, deity interaction and staff interaction should be done for roleplay reasons, as the staff desires and for little else.
Here we have another example of kaishaku going backwards beyond the bounds of a forum he has created.. I hope people can understand.
However, I did name this thing Beliefs not Religions..
I am just trying to allow people to talk about what they seem inclined to. I myself and still stuck in thinking about the game ideas and design.
That means you can ignore most of this and do your own thing if you want. :p
P.S. The word "buying" here is an abstract term. It is called beseech(ing) in game.
