I would like to preface this post with the notice that this is a radical departure from regular MUDs and I'm not even sure it can be called a MUD. It does seem to satisfy your emphasis on "roleplaying" but the main reason I am posting it here is that I needed to get this idea out in the open.
The "goal" of the game would be to have the most influence possible over the largest territory possible -- until you died. As this idea has matured, I have considered that the goal would be a sort of meta-game played by characters for whom it appealed to, and there be a more standard MUD game to play. At any rate, instead of being an intrepid adventurer, you would be the man behind the throne. Gameplay would be diplomacy with other kingdoms, managing the people and the military, and so forth: you see why it's not much of a MUD. The man-behind-the-throne would change rapidly. Kings could only live for so long, and they could have..premature deaths - and be replaced by someone over who the man has no control over, bringing about an opening for a new player.
I envision something of an everlasting Diplomacy game -- the same alliances and conquests, but without a "victory condidtion". You could begin as a Baron who takes over for his King when he dies and leads a quiet, large, stable kingdom in the founding lands, but fostering chaos on the border-lands so puppet kingdoms of yours can come into power. Or you could be the man behind the trone for a small kingdom on the borderlands, and scheme with your momentary allies to bring about the downfall of the new puppet kingdom protected by the armies of a large founder.
As well, I envision it to be fairly fluidic - players should beable to (OOC) recount the history of different kingdoms, remembering how this king or that king acted, and in a year's worth of play have only the highlights remembered becasue so many generations have gone past. There would be static parts - the founding kingdoms, who were the first to rise out of barbarinisim would be well established and move slow. But they would have colonies where there bee dragons, and those would have conflist. As well, there would be magecities, controlled by the most powerful magicaly inclined of the people -- and have the reserved title of mage. Their sole existance would be for diplomacy between the barbarics. The ultimate True Neutrals and with the force of magic to wipe nations off the face of the world behind it.
I can elaborate more if you're still reading and interested, but I think I'll stop wasting my time now.

My thoughts are moving in a similar direction, believe it or not. I should be getting started soon too, believe it or not. ;-)
I would like to hear more if you have it. If willing, please consider the chance this mud-like game would be played via a rich web application. (to some degree)
